Exams occupied the first week of the month and at their ending the Class of 1923 bade good-by to thirty-six men. The rest of us relaxed into Carnival preparations. Middle Mass. was used as a dormitory for girls and acquired a residual perfume that disturbed us for weeks afterwards. The ski jump was packed with snow trucked in from the woods but Outing Club luck brought a good snowfall on the night before Carnival opened. The first Outdoor Evening was a great success, although the crowd must have been stunned when 1923 lost the tug of war to the freshmen. There was no Carnival Queen chosen—that showmanship originated later—but there was a Carnival Ball where Leo Reisman, king of pre-swing, tore out our hearts with his "new song Bright Eyes. We watched the basketball and swimming teams swamp Harvard, the hockey game was called at the end of the first period when the Yale captain found the ice conditions dangerous. For the first time Dartmouth lost the Carnival Ski Meet to McGill, 25-37. C. C. Stewart and H. H. Bishop were point winners P. J. Keigher, K. C. Williams, M. S. Stern, J. G. Pollard, W. W. Cummings made the wrestling team J. M. Gilliland, M. S. Beggs, E. G. Schmidt were on the gym team G. H. Mason was a star debater.
