The latest count of those planning definitely to be at Reunion includes 74 men with 68 wives; three widows; and perhaps three grandchildren, one with Claire Greener and two with Kroggie and Gertrude Krogstad. Twenty-eight members are still uncertain of their plans, and 48 think it unlikely they will be able to make it. But there is still time for a change of mind, so perhaps the list of definites will continue to grow.
A note from Jay Willing a while back reported that while on a trip to Florida he and Marion had had a visit with Natch and Thelma Corregan, that the Corregans look well and seem to be enjoying life to the hilt. The Willings were planning to leave April 10 for a month in England, but Marion had been having some trouble with her back and the) may consequently have had to postpone the trip-At last report Jay was hopeful that they could still get their doctor's clearance, so we hope they are m England "now that April's there."
Rog and Marion Bury returned early in March from a 7300-mile drive to the Coast and back by way of Annapolis, Atlanta, Houston, etc. M Houston they talked with Bo Head who plans to be on for Reunion, and they stopped with Doane and Marie Arnold in Sun City, Ariz., both and coming. In San Diego they talked with Howie and Edna Muilin, the former still recovering from a broken ankle, the latter recovering from nursing the patient Tom Gillespie will undoubtedly have further details of the Bury trek in a forthcoming Speakeasy.
Good news from Bob Slater: He and Anne had had doubts about getting on for Reunion on account of Anne's long and painful recovery from a badly shattered ankle, but a recent doctor's report enough- encouragement so that they now feel sure they'll make it. Bob has promised to bring along his tenor sax "to-add to the din," a promise sparked by the news that Nat Morey will handle the piano and Charlie Huntley will bring his trombone He's also trying to persuade Phil and JaneThompson to take a brief vacation from their real estate business to come too. Bob retired from banking in December, 1971 but has done a bit of consulting which, with a lot of golf and much work on his garden and lawn, keeps him busy these days.
Curt Wright sent on a copy of a letter he had written to his son Curt IV on the occasion of that young man's "first real visit to Hanover," a visit tied in with his possible application for admission to the Medical School. It was a great letter, full of facetious comments and nostalgic humor, but ended: "All this levity aside, it has been a vicarious thrill for me And do not forget that it was Mary's suggestion that you apply to the Dartmouth Medical School, since she was so inspired by the talk of President Kemeny which we heard at the time of the Princeton weekend last fall." The letter has gone on to Tom Gillespie with the hope that other quotations may appear in some future Speakeasy.
Saddening letters from Donn H. Byrne and Art Keleher brought news of the death of Don's father, Albert H. Byrne, on 20 February, according to his son "a very proud alumnus and enthusiastic booster of Dartmouth." He also sent a check from Al's widow Margaret, "a contribution to the Alumni Fund to continue what was a tradition to Dad, contributing annually to Dartmouth."
And a telephone call from Bob Hazelton brought the sad news of the death of Charles E.L.Burwell on 14 February at South Freeport, Me. Bob later sent a fine long letter appreciative of his year and a half at Dartmouth and his friendship with Chuck; and a warm note from Bill Carr '34 expressed his recognition of Chuck's standing in the Maine community.
Those of you who remember Bill McCarter'19, sometime instructor in English, sometime assistant librarian, sometime graduate manager of Athletics, may be interested to know that on January 1 Bill's son William H. McCarter Jr., became a partner in the law firm of Warner & Stackpole of Boston. Bill would undoubtedly have had some wryly humorous comment, but those of us who knew him well would know just how proud he would have been of young Bill's success.
