We may be sadly reduced in number, but this clipping from the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press indicates that the old spirit of '79 still survives: "Lyndonville, Feb. 22.—Veteran 84 year old Charles M. Darling can still drive 'em. The dean of harness horse race drivers provided the thrills for a crowd of several hundred here today by scoring a double win in the Lyndonville Winter Driving club's 35th annual Washington's birthday ice races, winter season holiday classic in this section of the North Country."
The item goes on to state that he took his first win in four straight heats behind Martina Nash, and his second behind his colt Anne F., in three out of four heats.
The first contribution to the Alumni Fund for 1941 from '79 comes across the Continent from La Jolla, Calif., from Mrs. George H. Rockwood as a memorial to her late husband. It is just five times as large as her gift last year and she writes: "Last year I remember I had just come out of the hospital and hoped at that time I would be able to send a little larger gift this year, so it gives me pleasure today to send this check."
Fund Contributors for 1940 Contributors: 12 (240% of graduates). Total gifts: $754.72 (2156% of objective). CLIFFORD H. SMITH, Class Agent.
