HERE AND THERE

Jake Holland and Colin Churchill have set up bachelor quarters in Baltimore and from all reports it's the only kind of life. The grave vine reveals that Jake, Swede Linden and Bob Whidden had quite a reunion in Berlin, N. H. not so long ago and Berlin hasn't gotten over it as yet, nor have the boys for that matter. A 1 Green is having an interesting time traveling for Wilson & Cos., and has been reported seen in Utah, Idaho and Montana. Ralph Sperry writes that he is giving his all for the Bridgeport (Conn.) City Trust Cos. and sees quite a lot of Ken Hugo, Horton Wainwright and Bruce Gillie in and around town. Schenectady (N. Y.) has its baby '39 reunion in the every so often dinners of Bob DeGraff, reporting for the Schenectady Union-Star, and Fred Kerr, merchandizing for W. T. Grant Cos. From Philly we hear that Howie Pratt is doing himself proud at Temple Med School as is also Pete Talbot at Long Island Med School.

DOWN THE AISLE

For two months now I've been trying to include the announcement of Les McMillin's engagement to his lady of many house parties, Miss Hope Farrington of Forest Hills, Long Island, but space just hasn't permitted it. "Lambie" and Hope couldn't wait for us any longer and are now Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Shaw McMillin as of March ist. When last heard of Uncle Sam was trying to convince Les that his number was up and Army life was the thing, but he still favored married life and his oil job in Tulsa.

Bob Field finally convinced Miss Jean Pierce of Portland, Maine, and Connecticut College that he was THE guy. Jean you will recall was the pretty Miss who secretaried in the Ad Building our senior year. I understand that Bob's being in the Navy makes wedding plans rather indefinite. From New York comes news of the engagement of Bill Goodman to Miss June Karelsen of New York and Oberlin College.... a June wedding in the offing. This Mathes family is certainly Dartmouth minded. It isn't enough that Dick Jackson should marry the first of Jim's sisters, but now comes the news that Dusty Rohde is to toss bachelorhood to the winds for Miss "Happy" Mathes, the second of Jim's attractive sisters. I understand there is one more Mathes to be spoken for so come on you guys let's bring her into the '39 family, but above all don't let a Yalie win her.

Jan. 25th marked the engagement of Rodg Stanwood to Miss Elizabeth Bayer, Mt. Holyoke '4o—no wedding date having been set as yet. Rodg, incidentally, is still with the Tide Water Oil Cos. in Buras, Louisiana.

WRITER OF THE MONTH

This month I have received a number of interesting letters from fellows in various branches of the service and excerpts from them might be of interest.

From Gordon McCoun with the 101 st Cavalry, Fort Devens, Mass "Since my arrival here I have been placed in the mechanized unit of my outfit (they told me I was too big for a horse). M"y outfit is made up of scout cars—the crew of each car consisting of two 30 Cal. machine gunners, one 50 Cal. machine gunner, a radio operator, two riflemen, a car commander and a driver. I'm the driver of my car, have a specialty rating and get quite a thrill out of going 70 MPH and not being pulled in for it We're very comfortably settled up here....our barracks are heated and we have showers, electric lights and all other modern conveniences. The food is excellent. .. .we're particularly lucky in having a Mess Sar- geant who was a buyer for the Ritz Tow- ers in New York, so he doesn't let us want for a thing in the food line. Another fact worth noting is that we get two week-ends a month so that we're able to get to New York once in a while—this won't last very long, however, for I understand they're sending us South very soon You of course remember Josh, the dog I had at Hanover during my last two years—well, he is up here with me. He is my troop mascot, was commissioned a First Lieutenant by our Major, rides in all cars, eats with us, goes to all our movies, and has to be with us for all inspections and parades."

From Bud Griswold, Lieut., 4th Tank Cos., Marine Corps, San Diego "I entered the service a few days after leaving Tuck last Spring and have been Marine officering ever since. From last August until November I was in training in Quantico, Virginia and since November I've been mothering a platoon of tanks. Jim Donovan is here and is throwing out his personality to all the Junior Leaguers in this vicinity—same line that he used on the not so Junior Leaguers of White River Jet., and still as effective."

Bob Bacon, HQ Cos., Camp Shelby, Miss, writes.... "Have been down here ever since the Ohio Nat'l Guard mobilization in October. I joined the field artillery, but peeled an awful lot of potatoes and stood many a guard before being put on special duty as a Sargeant last month. Hattiesburg, where we are located is pretty decadent and hasn't very much to offer

Training at Shelby is progressing beyond hopes and schedules have been moved up three weeks—the 10,000 draftees that moved into camp last month are doing wonders By late spring our outfit will probably be moved to Texas or Puerto Rico—both are equally persistent latrine rumors."

From Bob Kaiser, Pvt., 2nd Observation, Fort Sill, Oklahoma... ."I left my job with N. W. Ayer Cos. in Philly last Jan. and was inducted into the Army at Fort Meade, Md. At Meade we had everything to our liking—good food, good quarters etc., the life vigorous and healthful, but not really hard. I'm now in the Field Artillery and am writing this to you en route to Fort Sill where I shall be stationed for the time being."

THE CLEARING HOUSE

Once again our Alumni Fund drive is to start, and I'm sure none of us need be reminded of our obligations to Dartmouth. Last year 1939 was far from outstanding in contributing its share despite the herculean efforts of Bert MacMannis, Peter Cardozo, Dick Jackson and their many helpers. I'm not going to make any long winded plea or speech, perhaps too much of that has been done—suffice it to say that the College needs your help and support so that it may offer its services to others. Let's hit the 100% donation mark this year, and above all no matter how small-GIVE TO THE ALUMNI FUND.

It's back to the Navy for your Secretary after this writing. Naturally time will be rather limited for me from now on. Any help you can give me by way of letters and cards will be most appreciated. The address above is for your convenience all communications will be forwarded to me. How about a helpful line from each one of you?

Fund Contributors for 1940 Contributors: 355 (70% of graduates). Total gifts: $963.86 (68% of objective). BERTRAM R. MACMANNIS, Class Agent.
