It appears that it's becoming a tradition to start this column each month with the tales of Jonathan Moore. When you tuned in on the last chapter of "The Perils of Jonathan," he had followed his positions as special counsel for the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare and special assistant to the Secretary of Defense, with the prestigious appointment as Associate Attorney General under Elliot Richardson. As you recall at the end of that sequence of events Jon resigned from the Justice Department with Elliot Richardson after the "Saturday Night Massacre" in which Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox was fired.

We begin this chapter of the "Perils Jonathan" with an announcement that Jonathan Moore has been named director of the John F. Kennedy Institute of Politics at Harvard, The following is a quotation from the Boston Globe:

"Moore will be the first full-time director and the first director who has not been a member of the Harvard Faculty.

"The institute of politics grew out of the original planning for the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. It was conceived as a focal point where students and professors could have close contact with practical questions in polities and where political figures could take time from their activities on a college campus.

"The Institute officially became a part of Harvard in 1966 and is scheduled to be permanently housed in a building adjacent to It: Kennedy Library.

"There have been suggestions for some time that a director be chosen from the "Activist" component of the Institute's Program to balance the work done to date by directors chosen for their academic work. Moore's selection appears to meet that criteria." I'll say!

I am sure you will all join me in wishing all the luck in the world. This is a high point career of public service!

A short notice in the Wall Street Journal announced that Dave McLaughlin has been elected director of the Meredith Corporation in Des Moines, lowa. Meredith is a publishing concern. Dave continues as president and chief executive of Toro Company," a manufacturer of power lawn mowers.

Out of the West comes an interesting pamphlet about Camp Westland of which Howard Sloan is the co-director. Camp Westland is situated in an alpine meadow at Brighton Ski Resort on Mt. Majestic, Utah, 25 miles from Salt Lake City. The purpose of the camp is to provide a variety of services and summer experiences for children ranging from age 8 to 13 who attend elementary school. This is apparently an extension of Howard's involvement as a professor of educational psychology at the University of Utah, where he is director of the Teaching-Learning Program. Howard's background includes a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and 15 years of professional experience, the last nine of which have been spent in educational research and instruction. The pamphlet from the camp makes interesting reading. It appears that Howard has been an important part of starting a new concept in summer camps that provides recreational activities combined with a program of remediation of learning difficulties. If you are interested m learning more about the camp, write to Howard c/o Behavior Systems Corporation; Camp Westland; Box 8123; Foothill Village Station; Salt Lake City, Utah 84108.

Barry Nova has been made the director of public "relations and sales promotion for the Publ,c United States Tobacco Company, comes the announcement from Greenwich, Conn. Previously Barry had been a senior vice president at Lennen and Newell Advertising Agency where he handled the Muriel Cigar account and most recently he was assistant to the chief executive officer of St. Reais Publications. He has also been president of the Dartmouth Club of Greenwich.

We have received a short note from the Associated General Contractors, Detroit Chapter, Inc. that it has a new president - our very own Bob Martin. Bob, who is president of the F.H. Martin Construction Company, has been chosen to head a group of 82 general contractors who have been responsible for construction in excess of $400 million in the greater Detroit area in 1973.

Our übiquitous treasurer Dick Barker has taken me to task for an item in the February column referring to Pete Robinson and his supposed marriage in Winter Park, Fla. It appears that I am the victim of misinformation. Dick informs me that the blurb the College sent about the Robinson marriage applied to Peter Robinson from the Class of 1970 instead of Pete Robinson, Class of '54. Gee, Dick, I don't know why you complained. Pete hasn't complained that I assigned him a second wife!

Our erstwhile chairman, Dave Mandelbaum, is already planning the executive committee meeting for this coming fall. The meeting will be held ;the weekend of the Harvard-Dartmouth football game. So reserve the dates of October 25-27 for a mini reunion and meeting in the Dartmouth wilderness. Dave has made arrangements with the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, Vt., to reserve 30 double rooms for that weekend. Tentative plans are for the meeting to take place at the Inn at 4 p.m., October 25 followed by cocktails and dinner. The executive committee looks forward to a large group joining it for this weekend. If you wish to take advantage of the arrangements at the Woodstock Inn, write directly to the Inn to make your reservations informing them that you are with the Class of 1954. Don't wait. The rooms will go fast!

We nave received an interesting letter from the Dartmouth Club of San Francisco outlining the first Dartmouth College Conference to be help in Francisco in 15 years. The dates are May 17-19. President Kemeny heads the list of outstaning speakers who will consider critical choices of the next decade. A whole weekend of activities is planned. For more information, write Dartmouth in San Francisco; c/o Derek T. Knudsen; Suite 2424; 1 California Street; "Francisco, California 94111.

That does it for April and unless there's a lot more news coming, the May column will be made up of changes of addresses. I'm sure you don't want to read such a boring list so how about dropping me a line! Waiting to hear from you!
