The Master mind of R. C. A. Victor is known to the radio, stage, and musical world as Leonard Joy, but generations of Dartmouth men know him as "Bones" Joy, who plays every instrument in the band or orchestra. It is said the only instrument he can't play is the bones of the Minstrel End men, hence the name "Bones."
Leonard Joy's High Hatters, an orchestra of strings and wood wind instruments only, brought something new to radio., and was voted the best orchestra on the air some years ago. Bones will be remembered by radio fans for his splendid conducting on the Coco Cola and Nestle Chocolate hours.
During his undergraduate years, he led the Mandolin Club, the orchestra, the band, and wrote the music for several prom shows, with time out to make cartoons for the Jacko. Since his last song hit, When Pa WasCourting Ma, Bones has been too busy masterminding for Victor Recordings to do any more composing. Time Magazine writes "Every recording studio has, for its popular output, one who can spot a tune, lead an orchestra, tell whether a trial recording is any good. Victor's mastermind is twinkling-eyed Leonard Joy."
Variety, the magazine of the entertainment world, and the New York newspaper columnists pay constant tribute to Bones for his able spotting of new talent. The Class of 1916 is proud of its Claremont, New Hampshire member.
