I was pleasantly surprised to find in my mail a letter written January roth from Judge Bruce Walter (Spike to you) Sanborn of Saint Paul. My first reaction was, here's news for the class family which they will enjoy. It was disappointing to read to the end and find in a query concerning fraternity affairs no information about Spike and his good family.
This is sufficient text for a thumb nail sermon on Class modesty. Modesty is an admirable quality to present to the world, but wholly unsound when maintained toward the group with whom you spent four Hanover years. May I point that NOW is the time for an exchange of facts that everyone in the Class may enjoy through these columns or by correspondence with one another. Let's have a period of boasting, for come what may, we have throughout our lives been privileged to live in the best half of the world. Now Spike write us the real news of the family and tell us when you are coming home.
Ralph Sexton's holiday greeting to each of us was a bit of frosting on the Christmas cake. Charles Irving Lampee, for the first time, failed to announce the arrival of a grandson promptly. A Christmas note announces with evident pleasure the birth of his fifth grandchild on July three last. "The young man now weighs over so pounds and will make a good hockey player like his dad, if the war is over by the time he is ready for Dartmouth"... .so writes Grandpop This introduces you to Nathan William Hawkes 3rd son of Nathan William Hawkes '32 and Carolyn (Lampee) Hawkes.
Had a pleasant hour with Robbie Christmas week. He was in his usual good humor looking forward to a Robinson family Christmas at his granddaughter's house.
Charlie 1900 Dolloff who has so ably conducted New Hampshire State Hospital for a generation says of Bill Carr. .. ."He was certainly an interesting and likeable character throughout his long stay with us."
Our Judge Advocate Burritt Havilah (Rosie) Hinman writes with admirable but unaccustomed restraint concerning a certain Baltimore member of the Class. His letter will be interesting to you, here it is "... .When I read in your column the libelous attack by that "Half-Pint" Kirker, it just riled me up. I know now that I should have plugged the key-hole because he is unable to look over the window sill. I want to say in my defense that half of the lies they tell about me are not so.
"Last Sunday I dropped in at the Lord Baltimore Hotel and found a meeting of college presidents in session. With some assistance I spotted our classmate Chase. I had the pleasure of introducing myself to him. I met President Ham of Mount Holyoke College and he couldn't have been more cordial had I been a graduate of his college.
"Sid Rollins, in his wanderings, came through Baltimore. I had a most enjoyable visit with him and was sorry to see him leave. He is one fellow who thumbs his nose at Father Time.
"I am leaving here in about two weeks for a new station at Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Alabama. From what I know about the place, I believe I will be very contented. If you know of any of the boys in that section, send me their addresses. I miss Mike."
To prevent misunderstandings I may say positively that the Kirker affair has nothing to do with Rosie's recent decision to move further into the Southland.
