Ely's recent autobiography, "Ground Under Our Feet," its title very likely suggested by Ely's interest in land economics, is an interesting volume, but specially interesting to those who knew the author as Dick Ely during his one year at Dartmouth. Toward the end of the volume it becomes apparent that the author belongs to the group known as "welfare economists," though it would seem that no economist really escapes ethical conclusions.
Ely is a member of the '76 delegation, Dartmouth chapter, of Alpha Delta Phi. Of the twelve other members of the delegation pledged at the same time, there survive Hardison, McCutcheon, Piper and Tripp. Mrs. W. R. Patterson's latest word from her son in Manila is dated the last of December 1941.

Hardison, in a recent letter, mentioned, with full appreciation, the sonnet, "High Flight," written by John Gillespie Magee Jr., an American flier who lost his life in action last December. Almost any extended life term seems possible for verse of such quality as this of Magee.
