Next month you will have a detailed report of the collection of dues from that beloved collector of revenue, (not the U. S. Collector, bless him!) Jocko Morrison, who reports that we didn't do so badly, considering everything. However, quite a few '36ers still keep forgetting to send in their $2.75, and even though the report has been submitted for publication, I'm sure that Jock would be more than willing to deposite any additional sums made available to him and would make the necessary corrections on the balance sheet before the tenth of next month rolls around. The 10th, incidentally, is the monthly deadline for classnotes copy to be submitted to the editors of Ye ALUMNI MAG., SO anyone who sends in dope, please remember—otherwise, the news may be a month old before publication.
Jim Atwill managed to climb out of the doughboy class into the U. S. Naval Air Force at Jacksonville, Fla. where he is now an aviation cadet. Doc. Harry Lowd, who in last month's column was in the Army, gave the lie to that statement by showing up at Hanover, resplendent in the uniform of a Lieut. J.G., U. S. Navy, with his wife, for a brief furlough from duties which are entirely hush, hush, but which Harry says are "v-e-r-y exhilarating," to say the least. Mort Mintz is wallowing in superb ski school snow, to quote him directly, "as the only '36 private in the Army, but not for long," way down in Alabama. Bob Taylor's Dad writes that Bob is in the 98th Bomb Group at Barksdale Field, Louisiana. And so it goes
If any of you guys want to work for a millinery company, write to me, because one, I don't know how good, wrote to me as an employment agent for the class. They don't want "draftable" young men, however.
The prize of the month for letter writing goes to Bob Walker, who is still at graduate school in medicine at the U. of Penna., but who had time to get married to Evelyn McCann of Hartford, Conn, last Dec. 27., and whose Best Man was Steve Smith, Lieut. J.G. U. S. Navy, who himself was married on Dec. 6 to Ina Seaver of Hubberston, Mass., when Bob was Best Man for him. Walker says Bob Chaffee is still with the Geological Dept. at the U. of P. Thanks for the letter, Bob. Wish I could extend like thanks to you, the one who is reading this!
Jean Forrester of Los Angeles, Cal. became the wife of Bern Woods way back in Dec. 1940, and that pair, now at the Manlius School on the faculty, have a son, Wm. born Feb. 3, 1942. Bern's letter was the other letter I got last month. Thanks, Bern.
I was interested in a notice which appeared in the erstwhile correct newssheet, The Dartmouth, a short time ago, that Stuart MacMackin '26 was to speak at Roy Chamberlain's Sunday Evening Fellowship. I didn't see Stu, but two years ago he didn't look that old to me.
From the clipping bureau I find: Cramp Carrick was elected treasurer of the Dartmouth Club at Camp Edwards. The Club boasts a membership of more than 50 men. Bill Garlick, now M.D. is engaged to Vivian Crispell of Poughkeepsie, N. Y. Lieut. Bill Ferguson is engaged to Frances Conway of Short Hills, N. J. Doc Bob Birchall and Nancy Lowry of Port Washington, L. I. were married January 21. Bob is a First Lieutenant in the Army. The clipping bureau ran out of clippings.
This month we will forego the luxury of printing all the address changes. Since no one has written either pro or con re- garding the matter, I take it that nobody gives a damn one way or the other, thus leaving me to choose to do what I will. It's hard and boring to copy addresses by the hunt-and-peck method on the typewriter, so I choose to skip it. If anyone beefs loud enough the procedure will be resumed.
O JL I think most of you would envy me to- night. Spring is in the air. The boys were without topcoats today, and my wife tells me that she was whistled at several times this afternoon for the first time since last summer. A sure sign of spring! As I write this from the bottom floor of the Ad Bldg. I can see scattered groups ambling across the duck boards toward Dartmouth where Owen Lattimore will discuss China andthe War, a lecture which I hope to attend after finishing these notes. The conflict seems far away, and it is easy to see in the scattered groups old gaits and old faces. It would not be unnatural, if it were not for the need to preserve the dignity of a for- mal administrative position, to amble over by Wheeler and yell up four floors for the old roommates to hurry because /05 Dart-mouth was fast filling up. They would have been down getting measured for their new Junior Jackets or at the Nugget, yell- ing like hell at the chorines in Bob Hope's latest picture. It would have been a peace- ful evening even as it's peaceful here to- night filled with study—probably little —bridge, and a lot of grousing about this old hole and the need to get away for a week-end at Smith. But, the old faces aren't on those duckboards. The old faces are far away, many where it is far from peaceful. The people at the lecture aren't going to find that the world outside of Hanover is peaceful, and the boys there are not going to be here much longer, either. They will soon be joining you out there in the wide, wide world which is so small, and they will take with them the eve- nings such as this, which is Hanover, which is Dartmouth, and the memories which are yours and which are mine, and which are theirs—memories of spring in the hills. It's 8:25. The lecture begins at 8:30.
