FOR OUR MARCH MEETING we were looking forward to a visit from the Secretary, Sid Hayward, and were disappointed to learn, two days before the scheduled elate, that he was ill and couldn't come. However, he provided a very acceptable substitute in Professor Donald Stone, a stranger to most of us when he came, but a friend when we bade him "good bye." He gave us a very clear and interesting account of the problems presented to the College by the war situation and of the many and sweeping changes being made in order to equip the students as well as possible for what may be ahead of them.
Tom Boyan '38, a newcomer to Baltimore, turned up at this meeting. He is managing the large floor-covering store that Charlie Keyes left a year or so ago. With him came Bob McConeghy '38, a visitor from the Pittsburgh district, and Bob's brother who lives in Baltimore. Sam Dillon '37 also blew in, from Hancock, Md„ a mere hundred miles or so away. We are much pleased, naturally, to have, for the first time, a representative on the Alumni Council. As already announced in the April number, our Councilor-elect is our good friend, loyal fellow-alumnus and able former president, Judd McCarthy '26. A cloud has been cast over our gatherings this season by the long and serious illness of our popular president, Jake Shafer '37, whom we greatly miss when he is unable to be with us.
