THE CLASS OF EIGHTY-SEVEN was the oldest holding a reunion this year. Although twenty-eight are living of the seventy-eight graduated fifty-five years ago, there were only eight present at the festivities.
President Bingham appointed Sydney E. Junkins of Hanover, as chairman of a committee of three to make the arrangements, and the entire burden fell upon him. He did a fine job and received a unanimous vote of thanks.
There was an informal dinner at the Hanover Inn. The Secretary offered the prayer and acted as toastmaster. There were two formal addresses scheduled,—one by Dr. Frank Berry Sanborn, in memory of Emerson Rice, devoted secretary of the class for 45 years, and the other by Albert Emerson Hadlock, affectionately known as "Dan."
Fifty per cent of those present have received honorary degrees from Dartmouth, —LL.D., to Bingham and Howland, D.Eng., to Junkins, and latest D.Sc. to Sanborn.
The class was delighted by this latest honor as proof that age is no deterrent to achievement. Dr. Sanborn's degree was awarded at this year's commencement, and the splendid citation will interest the whole class. It was:—
"The Bachelor's degree which fifty-five years ago you earned from this college you supplemented with a degree in Engineering from the Thayer School and later with a Master's degree in Science from Harvard University. The list of your accomplish- ments as scientist, college professor, inventor, and developer of mechanical aids for medical use is too long for recital here. After nineteen years in academic work as member of a coilege faculty teaching Civil Engineering, your desire for the development of scientific apparatus, in promotion of which you had become interested, led you to abandon the security of your college professorship and to launch an industrial enterprise which today stands as leader in its field of manufacture of electrocardiograph and basal metabolism apparatus—a concern which, moreover, has been built up to a unique position in the field of employer-employee relationships through its policy from early days of profit sharing. Upon you as scholar, one-time teacher, inventor, progressive industrialist, and scientific authority on measurement of heart beats, blood pressure, and like problems concerned with the health of human beings, I confer the honorary degree of Doctor of Science."
The following letter, subscribed by all at the reunion was sent to all absent classmates:
Here we are, eight old boys of the Class of '87 having an honest-to-goodness reunion to celebrate our 55th Anniversary.
We are having a dinner tonight with all the parts, toasts, prayer, speeches, and letters. This is to show that we are very much alive and full of pep.
Our real sorrow is the absence of you from these festivities. So as our dear old leader Dan Hadlock has suggested, we are sending every one of you who are not here this letter of cheer and encouragement to keep the torch of '87 flaming brightly and in devotion to our class traditions. We are always
Affectionately yours,
One incident, as an illustration of the youthful spirit of the class is furnished by Gage and Sanborn. They attended a bowling competition as spectators and were invited to participate. Gage won the first prize for singles, and Sanborn the first for pairs.
There was no change in the officers, Judge Bingham continuing as President, and the new Secretary's appointment being made permanent.
