KANSAS CITY AND THE Dartmouth alumni of this vicinity had the distinctive honor of being hosts to the College basketball team during its visit here to play Stanford University for the National Championship.
The outcome is now history, but patrons of basketball in the midwest were out- spoken in their praise of the team from Hanover, and voiced loudly their hope that they will play again next year. Stanford, by their performance in the semi-finals, had gained many local backers, and went into the game a decided favorite, but the sensational scoring of George Monroe in the early minutes of the game convinced fans that this was a championship game.
On Friday, before the game, the boys of the team had the opportunity to see Kansas City in cars of the alumni, while members of the Alumni Association were getting a firsthand report on College athletic activity, at luncheon with Coach Ozzie Cowles and Whitey Fuller.
On Saturday night after the game the Kansas City alumni held Open House at the Muehlebach Hotel, to introduce the members of the team and the coaching staff to visiting alumni. An enthusiastic group of alumni from St. Louis included Tom Curtis '32, Phil Bassett '30, Tom Hession '27, Al Lathrop '28, Boyd Rogers '35, Rand Rodger '31, Mort May, and others who were too busy greeting old friends to register.
Others who didn't let distance prevent them from supporting this fine team included Allan Tukey '14, of Omaha, Warren Crosby '26 and John P. Adams '33 of Topeka, John T. Mcßae '32 of Minneapolis, Karl Williams '23 of Rockford, George Avery '26, Sioux City, W. D. Pollard '06 of Peru, Neb., C. Kehoe, Oklahoma City, and Phil Eckels '34 of Atchison, Kansas.
The game, and its attending functions, provided for the first time in the Kansas City area a medium of sufficient interest to bring together the widely separated alumni, and the appreciation of this opportunity was attested by the all-night sessions that followed the game.
The gathering was given a particularly Hanoverian atmosphere by the appearance of "Spud" Bray and Jim Campion '28.
Those of us in this area look forward to next year, when we feel confident we will again play host to this fine team.
