I was hoping to take this lovely Saturday noon in Philly and get a look at the current edition of Dartmouth football, but it was no go, and to top it all off, I can't get the game on the air. I sure do lead a tough life. I hope that I'll have a final score before I go to work at five tonight, however.
A fairly quiet month along the gay white way Mulligan with his bride of three days dropped by to see me on his way back to Washington where, believe it or not, he's got an apartment Phil Brooks, who like Mull took a Burlington, Vermont, gal for his bride last month, also passed by my doorsteps not too long ago, and dropped in to pass the time of day. Phil has been tossed around more than somewhat by his draft board, and when I saw him was about to report for the third or fourth time. Don't know whether he is out or in at this writing .... and Lt. Bud Dutton got me on the telephone one night when he was in town. .... Which is about the limit of my experience in a hectic September.
Out of the mail comes news that BudMcKinlay has been transferred to subchaser school in Miami, as he has long desired. On his way south from the Pacific, Bud stopped off in Chicago, where his engagement to Miss Carol Gillogly, of that town and Northwestern University was announced Sid Bull, now a sergeant, comes in from England again just before KP duty. Like so many of you he says that Dartmouth is just about the biggest thing he misses V-mail from Lt. Dave Allen, who I suspect is in North Africa or near the Mediterranean Theatre, tells of running into Ens. Ralph Falk now a gunnery officer in the Navy. Other Dartmouth '42's out there have escaped Dave who is tied pretty close to his post most of the time. .... And Bill Peters, unheard of since graduation, has broken his long silence. Bill is now a corporal at Huntsville, Ala. He was inducted in October a year ago and spent the fall season in Alabama mud. Has run into Admiral Bob Dewey, but no one else from school That leaves Dale Bartholomew to be heard from. I gathered from Ted Arico's last letter that our president is in the Air Corps on the West Coast Also from England comes news from Ens. Sandy Frank. Sandy has seen a lot of training with the Navy, including Chapel Hill Pre-Flight, Flight Training; and after trouble with air sickness, Tower Hall at Northwestern. Roomed with Matt Rapf at Tower Hall, and then saw Bud Pogue and Bill Provost in later training. He agrees with Bull that the English are okay, except they are a little reserved Which is the sum total of your contributions this month.
From other sources there is more to tell you about In the way of promotions, the two new Marine captains, Jim Crotty and Wally Sigler, both in aviation. From all reports they have seen a lot of action. .... Also understand that Hank Coleman is a full lieutenant in the Navy, but that needs confirmation Bob Moore was commissioned in Army Air Administration in Miami in August and Hank Reynolds is now an ensign And Jack Harriman is now a 2nd lieutenant in Army Air Corps communications, getting his training at Yale Press confirmation of AdWinship's marriage to Christine Hill of Andover, Mass., on September 4 DekeHolmes who transferred to the Arizona School of Mines after sophomore year, married Jane Kuhlke of Westbury, L. I., on September 11. Tasty Thomson, now studying medicine in New York City, was best man and Marine Lt. Chick Camp was an usher Ens. Dave Dunlap married Jean Van Valkenberg on August 28 in Waterbury, Conn. Dave will be stationed at Buford, S. C The engagement of HerbMorrison and Carol Babbitt of Nashua, N. H., was announced on September 11. Herb, in Naval Reserve, is studying medicine at McGill Bill Housel's engagement to Nancy Pingree of Boston was
announced on September 18. Bill is now a lieutenant (jg) .... and finally the marriage of Ens. Jim Brock who transferred to the University of Cincinnati, to Jane Wagner of Cincinnati on September 8. Final score: Penn-7; Dartmouth-6, a real heartbreaker.
