Laurence D. Wiseman has been elected president of the American Forest Institute. Larry joined AFI in 1981 and has been acting chief executive since June 1984. AFI administers the American Tree Farm System and other programs, including Project Learning Tree, an environmental education program used in 35 states by 60,000 educators. Larry earned his M. A. in public affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton and in 1971 began work as producer and executive producer for WQED, a national production center for public television. While there, Larry wrote and produced over 100 films, TV programs, and community education projects, including The People's Business, starring Bing Crosby. Before joining AFI, Larry was vice president of Yankelovich, Skelly, and White, a research and public affairs consulting organization. Larry lives in Potomac, Md., with his wife, Robin, and their two children.
A repeat item from a column last year, but well worth a second mention, is the inclusion of Mike Stratton in the 1984 Esquire Register of Outstanding Americans. The December issue contains the register, and I'm sure your local library will have it, so you can read about Mike's unique contributions to the education of young people. Mike is the director of the Carroll School Bounders Program in Lincoln, Mass., and has traveled the world over, working for numerous Outward Bound programs and offshoots.
Brian O'Connor has been appointed assistant professor in the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State University, Emporia, Kans. Brian earned his M. A. at Montclair College in New Jersey and his M.L.S. and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. Brian's primary interest is in the "book-like" use of film, video, and other new media. Along with his academic chores, Brian is an independent film producer and was production manager of the Contra Costa Symphony in California from 1977 to 1979.
In Montana's Senate District 50, Bill Yellowtail was elected easily over a former state representative. His district includes Big Horn County, along with parts of two other counties.
The anthropology .department at Dartmouth has put out a newsletter in which Hobie Collins and his wife, Mary, report that, with both of them working, "life can be very confusing." Hobie is a hospital administrator in Cooperstown, N.Y.
