WINTER SPORTS PLANS UNDER WAY; BRUMSTED '46 ELECTED PRESIDENT
IN SPITE OF extended class periods, drills, and parades, both Cabin and Trail and Winter Sports are functioning at full capacity. The Winter Sports Department, with a full complement of personnel, is planning a program for the coming winter which will offer a complete roster of activities. Work trips are being organized to complete minor repairs on the Big Jump as well as a major job on the small jump on the golf course. Fred Campbell USMCR, who is Manager of Skiing, is busy lining up competition for the ski team and although it is not expected that a full schedule of meets will be possible, it is hoped that there will be enough intercollegiate competition to keep team enthusiasts happy. While there are no National Downhill champions available as team members, it is possible to spot from this office window enough promising material to form the nucleus of a ski team which will give a good account of itself when the snow season rolls around. No ski coach has been found to date, and it is unlikely that anyone will be available.
Bob Lee USNR, Director of Competitions, is working on an ambitious program of local meets and intramural activities which will give many trainees new to Dartmouth an opportunity for competition in platoon and company meets.
The hunting season on upland game and migratory birds has brought an influx of inquiries into the office. Questions range all the way from "Do I need a dog?" to "Where can I get some shotgun shells?" —which rates as the sixty-four dollar question. Grouse are already reported as plentiful, and venison feeds are being talked up with a great deal of optimism.
Cabin and Trail has carried out an ambitious program of trips throughout the summer and fall with a full complement of trainees and civilian students loaded into the Navy truck each weekend going out to Mt. Washington, Cardigan, and other high points.
The annual D. O. C Banquet was held in the Ski Hut at the Hanover Inn on Tuesday, October 5, when a group of fifty members met to enjoy a chicken dinner cooked by Ross McKenny and a crew of helpers. Movies of D. O. C. activities were shown and loud singing competed with the College band which was practicing in a nearby building. As is the custom, the new President of D. O. C. is announced on this occasion and Harlan Brumsted '46 was elected. Brumsted is a native of Batavia, New York, and is a Naval Trainee in the V-12 Unit here. The list of fifteen new members recently elected to Cabin and Train was announced by Brumsted who also presented the new men with C & T emblems.
Visions of skating on Occum Pond and snow covered ski hills loom nearer with Hanover experiencing its first severe nightly frosts. It won't be long now. Ski Heil!
