From an enlistment as seaman, first class, in January '42, up through third- and second-class quartermaster to a commission as lieutenant (jg) is the swell record hung up, to date, by Dean Baker. This one belongs in the "From Tinker to Evers to Chance" department. From Sherm Baldwin comes a letter from Phil Jellison enclosing a letter from Walt Jarmon enclosing a letter from A 1 Emerson. (No, that last beer wasn't spiked, and your bifocals aren't playing tricks. That's the way it happened.) Here's the play-byplay report. A 1 Emerson, who presidents the Emerson National Bank of Warrensburgh, N. Y., wrote Walt Jarmon that he has enlisted in the Army, and is now taking a special training course after spending a month at Camp Custer. Walt, who is general sales manager of Virginia Dare wrote Phil Jellison that Al's rank is captain. Phil wrote Sherm that Walt wants Al's letter back. And I have entered a requisition with treasurer Bill Whipple for a nice interlined strait-jacket with doublebartacked seams, for Christmas. But Whipple's a hard man, and anyway, the story is that A 1 Emerson is a captain. Let us know your new address as soon as you're transferred, Al, and give us whatever dope you can on your activities.
Sherm Baldwin writes that he had a good visit a few weeks ago with Dr. Ed Hopkins, who, in addition to his flourishing practice in Ayer, has the position of school doctor for the Groton School, where the eldest of his four sons is now a freshman.
Chick Burke, who is area supervisor for Shell Oil in Worcester, keeps busy trying to find things to keep him busy enough to keep him out of his office and away from a lot of Shell dealers clamoring for more of what Chick can't get to sell. Chick's wife is busy, too, having just been elected publicity chairman of the Brown Alumnae Club of Worcester1 County.
And now, "Heap the logs on the fire, pass the pipes, pass the bowl." Have a merry Christmas, all men of '23. For next month will be next year, and we have much to hope for.
