A SPECIAL INTERSESSION LASTING Seven weeks, from May 10 through June 26, and covering three-fifths of a full semester's work will be attended by approximately 600 Dartmouth undergraduates, it is estimated by Registrar Robert O. Conant '13. This short term has been scheduled in order to bring the College's academic calendar into line with the Navy College Training Program which starts on or about July 1. Thereafter the schedules of the civilian College and the Navy Training School will be the same—three 16-week terms a year starting about the first of July, November and March.
The intersession will enable most seniors to obtain their degrees before July, the work of the short term being accepted in place of an eighth semester provided the major courses are completed and the comprehensive examination is passed. During the intersession all courses will meet five days a week, Monday through Friday, and attendance will be compulsory. A short College recess from April 27 to May 9 is preceding the special term.
The Navy has ruled that all Dartmouth reservists in the V-i and V-7 classes must attend the intersession, and it is anticipated that the Marine Corps will follow suit. It was originally announced that these reservists could remain out of college for the seven-week period pending the start of the College Training Program, but this ruling was later reversed by the Navy.
Thayer School and Tuck School will both hold intersessions along with the College proper, but Dartmouth Medical School does not end its present term until June 17 and will not be able to hold one. All three associated schools will follow the Navy schedule starting July 1, and Tuck School has announced that it will admit men with four semesters' work at that time.
Five dormitories—Crosby, Wheeler, North Fayerweather, Streeter, and Chasewill be used for the intersession. Others not occupied by the Indoctrination School will be made ready for the Navy V-12 unit.
