According to latest information, Dartmouth will continue with its plans to carry out its regular 1943 football schedule next fall, although it may be done on a considerably ably modified basis. It is expected that a successor to grid coach Tuss McLaughry, now a Major in the Marines, will be named in the near future.
Just how much of the nine-game schedule can or will be played is not yet known. However, 23 members of the 1942 varsity football squad have, at present, a military status which may allow them to return to College and report for the 1943 team. Most of this number are enlisted in the Navy V-i, Navy V-7, and Marine Corps Reserves, and are expected to remain at Dartmouth as part of the Navy College Training unit just assigned to the College. The Navy's ruling on their participation in intercollegiate athletics is yet to be made, but previous announcements have indicated that the Navy will be far more liberal in this respect than the Army will be.
Of the 23 players who may return to Dartmouth next fall, nine won varsity letters last year. This veteran group includes left end Mo Monahan, guard Roger Antaya, and centers Norm Brown and Hal Bowman in the line; and Johnny Burroughs, Art Carey, Larry Bartnick, Johnny Roberts, and Jack Sayers in the backfield. The squad members likely to return include ten in the Navy V-1, four in the Navy V-7, six in the Marines, and three deferred from selective service. This number will also be augmented by a number of freshmen entering with the Class of 1947 in July, and possibly by Navy transfers from other colleges. All in all, the gridiron picture at Dartmouth is brighter than at many other colleges, thanks to the selection as a Navy training center.
