CHAIRMAN OF THE 25th Reunion Gift Committee of the Class of 1918 is Dave Garratt, 195 Broadway, New York City, who reports only a short distance to go in achieving the $15,000 objective for the Class Fund which will be turned over to the College later this month. Class secretary, Ernie Earley, has received the following letter accompanying an additional substantial contribution from an 'iBer who has been in France for 25 years and has suffered during the occupation. The donor to the Class Fund, which will be added to the endowment of the College, writes:
"It has been my desire to make this additional donation to the fund for sometime but unusual expenses during the past few months have put some restraint upon what I feel is my obligation. However, after reading 'President Hopkins Describes State of College' and the 'Liberal Arts College' by W. H. Cowley, President of Hamilton, I can hold off no longer. If ever the type of college as represented by Dartmouth were needed, it is right now. American is rapidly falling into a groove which is being cut deeper and deeper and a pity it is that there are not more institutions like Dartmouth, Williams, Hamilton, Amherst and a few others whose duties it would be to act as balance wheels for the future.
"The great responsibility rests upon the college toward maintaining some sort of equilibrium in this wonky world and Dartmouth has her work cut out for her. As long as we have a man like President Hopkins at the helm, we need to worry but little providing we all give him the support he needs, but unfortunately, he can't be with us always. The best of luck to Dave and the splendid job he is doing for the rest of the 'iBers. We are all indebted to him for the hard work but at least he has the satisfaction of knowing that a good job is being done well."
