Marine Unit Added
June 1943

A Marine Corps Unit of 660 men has been assigned to Dartmouth as part of the V-12 Naval Training School starting July 1, it was learned by the College as this issue went to press. This will be the only Marine Unit of its kind in the First Naval District and will be made up of 650 reserve privates in the basic course and ten in the engineering course.

Captain John Howland, Marine Corps Reserve, has been named Commanding Officer of the Marine detachment at Dartmouth, effective June 1. He will be subordinate to the V-12 Director as yet unnamed. Machine Gunner John Crecion will be Captain Howland's assistant.

As part of the Dartmouth Unit of approximately 2,400 men, the Marine detachment will have its own dormitories and its own administrative staff, and will wear the uniforms of Marine privates in contrast to the apprentice seaman uniforms of the Navy trainees.
