Sophomore Chris Carstensen capped a tremendous swimming season by taking fourth place in the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA meet at the University of Utah. Carstensen's time of 21.3 seconds is a Dartmouth record. Jim Gottschalk also lowered his Dartmouth record in the 100 backstroke to 54.66 seconds in a trial heat at the NCAA meet. His time of 1:58.89 in the 200 medley at the Eastern meet also is a College record. Co-Captain-elect AI Rheem set another Dartmouth record at the Eastern meet with a winning time of 51.1 seconds in the 100 butterfly and then took ninth place at the NCAA meet with a time of 51.66 seconds. Mike Brown, the senior super diver, took sixth place in both the one - and three-meter dives at the NCAA meet and was fifth in the 10-meter platform diving at the AAU meet. Brown, Carstensen, Gottschalk, and the 400 freestyle relay combination of Stu Vance, Fred Severance, Rheem, and Carstensen were named to the Eastern League allstar team.
The American Hockey Coaches Association has named its award honoring the national small college coach of the year in memory of Eddie Jeremiah.... John Jackson, offensive backfield coach at Hofstra for the past two years and a successful high school football coach in metropolitan New York for nearly ten years before joining the Hofstra staff, has been named coach of offensive backs and ends on Coach Bob Blackman's staff at Dartmouth.... Dartmouth's basketball team will play Marquette, the defending National Invita- tion Tournament champion, in the opening round of the Milwaukee Classic on Dec. 29. Wisconsin and Texas are the other teams in the tournament.... Dartmouth's hockey team will appear in the ECAC Holiday Tournament at the Boston Garden on Dec. 18-19 and also will compete in the Nichols Tournament at Buffalo, N. Y., on Jan. 1-2.
Luncheon to Honor Michael
A testimonial luncheon, honoring Karl Michael, will be held on Saturday, May 16, at Alumni Hall in Hopkins Center. Michael retires in June after coaching Dartmouth's swimming team since 1939.
Persons who plan to attend the luncheon or participate in the testimonial fund should respond to Will Volz, director of physical education, in care of Alumni Gymnasium, Hanover.
