Four catchers were named by Tesreau as being especially capable. Frankie Ross '21 and Mel Merritt '20, both of whom returned after the first World War to play on Tesreau's two earliest clubs, came to mind first as he discussed the receivers, and then he chose Catcher Frankie Heep '23, to be on the team along with the others. A few years later the fourth outstanding backstop in the person of Ambrose McLaughlin '29 of Littleton, N. H., played well enough during the season to be included as one of the four standouts of a 25-year coaching reign.
Twelve pitchers were mentioned by Tesreau for this honor squad, and he probably could have gone through a much longer list. Stan Lyon '24 was the first one whom he recalled, and then he named Bill Breckinridge '30, Gunnar Holstrom '30, and Way Thompson '33. The '25 nine had its share of hurlers too, for three members of its staff are on the list of outstanding ones—Foster Edwards '25, "Speedy" Fleet '25, and Charlie Comerford '25. In the thirties Lauri Myllykangas '31, Ted Olson '36, Bob Miller '34, and Wonson all pitched for Dartmouth teams and were named to the All-Dartmouth group. Bill Gray '43, who left school at the end of his junior year, is also included, which is logical since he holds the Eastern Intercollegiate League strikeout record of 16 in one game. Tesreau pointed out that Bud Doole '45 was another good college pitcher but that he did not have a chance to play during a regular college season, being in the Navy Air Corps. He will have to wait until after the war.
When asked if he remembered any particular games or incidents during his Dartmouth career, Tesreau was, as usual, noncommittal but did say, "In 1925 we won two important games in two days on triples." Someone in the dugout then reminded him that Wonson had hit a long home run against Brown which won a Hanover game, 4-3, to which he replied, "That's right!"
It looks now as if World War II might temporarily slow down Big Jeff's career, but after it is over, if not before then, he'll be back at his corner of the batting cage shouting directions in stentorian tone to pitchers, hitters, and fielders. And the Indian baseball teams will be trying to increase the number of pictures on the walls of the Davis Field House, where the 1930, the 1935, and the 1938 teams are hung, each bearing the caption "Eastern Intercollegiate League Champions."
