Guest of Honor
August 1943

Late in May, Lester B. Granger '18 was honored at the annual dinner meeting of the New Jersey Urban League. Mr. Granger, who comes from Newark, has for the past year been executive secretary of the National Urban League. Speakers at the dinner, in addition to Mr. Granger, included Governor Edison of New Jersey, and L. Hamilton Garner, president of the New Jersey Urban League. In a plea for the abolition of discrimination against minorities, especially those of racial origin, Governor Edison cited many instances wherein democracy falls short of its ideal of racial equality. Mr. Granger spoke of the growing trend of thought among the Negro race, which, if steps are not taken, may grow into something "dangerous and disturbing." He said that the "acid test" of American democracy lies in establishing "a formula of opportunity applicable to all people." Mr. Granger, who was guest of honor at the dinner, was commended for his work in many fields, including his past connections with the New Jersey league, by Dr. Walter Alexander of the State Board of Health; William Valentine, principal of Bordentown Manual Training School; and Bishop Washburn of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark.
