At second base is Paul Guiney, regular keystone sacker for Holy Cross this spring, while Mike Azzone, formerly with the Scranton (Pa.) Red Sox, is playing reserve. Stan Zarod, Dartmouth third baseman is at the hot corner, and also serving as captain of the summer nine, while Dick Woehr, who played last season with the Columbia, S. C., team in the South Atlantic League, is at short. Phil Fessenden and Bob Callan, both Dartmouth infielders, are also on the squad.
In the outfield coach Jeff Tesreau has Jim Curren, stocky little outfielder from the University of Connecticut, Joe Ososki from Fordham, and Walt Snickenberger, outfielder and pitcher for the Dartmouth nine this spring. Joe Quig, heavy hitting Dartmouth backstop, is also slated to see action as a catcher and an outfielder this summer.
Greatest difficulty with the baseball nine has been to arrange a schedule for the remainder of the season. With so many colleges cancelling their plans for baseball teams this year, most games will have to be played with service nine and fast, semi-pro clubs. In order to allow V-12 trainees to participate, all games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.
In the other athletic departments, coach Tom Dent has reported that soccer practice will get underway on August first, while Harry Hillman is still seeking opponents for his track team this year. Meanwhile, Don Burnham, Dartmouth's ace miler, is continuing his running and is scheduled to meet Gil Dodds and Gunder Haegg, the Swedish flyer, on July 24 in a special benefit race in the Harvard stadium. Several other tracksters, including Henry Eckert Jr., a member of the N. Y. U. National AAU Championship team, Bill Atkinson, intercollegiate half-mile champion, and several others, all of them now stationed here with the V-12 unit, may also compete in various events in the same meet.
