October 1944 HENRY H. AUSTIN

The class of 1885 has suffered an irreparable loss through the death of the secretary,Edwin A. Bayley, who loyally served the College and his class. The last Notes which hesent in, written while he was under his doctor's care, follow. (Ed. Note.)

Our president, Charlie Chase, has been having quite a siege from a cataract on one of his eyes. We are very glad to report that the operation was successful and for some time he has been able to go to his office daily. His classmates join in sending him hearty congratulations on the good recovery he is making.

Dr. John Brooks, who is also our class agent, reports that he and Mrs. Brooks spent a very enjoyable sojourn of three months at Pinehurst, N. C. He and Henry Austin seem to be the lucky ones of our class who are fortunate in being able to avoid the rigors of our Northern winter season in the "Sunny South;" we congratulate them on everything except the transportation difficulties. We should all be glad to make a little extra effort to assist him in his duties as class agent, which he is filling so efficiently.

Henry Austin and his wife finally secured transportation from Florida and reached Warner, N. H., shortly after the middle of May. Their home-coming, on account of lack of transportation, was one o£ the most disturbing they have ever experienced and they were very happy to reach their summer homestead in "Austinville." Their neighborhood friends welcomed them by ringing the church bell and raising the flag of the precinct; Henry is now very busy catching up with his duties as a "dirt farmer."

The class will be sorry to learn of the death of Louise Wilson Floyd, wife of the late Charles W. Floyd '85; services were held in the Newton Cemetery Chapel, September 4.
