The four years of the class of '83 in Dartmouth College marked the period of Dartmouth's early participation in intercollegiate sports. Though football had hardly gotten under way, the class of '82 had three outstanding members of the college baseball nine; Partridge at first base, Mathewson at third base and catcher, Webster left, or center, field; it is appropriate to mention here that Mathewson led his class in scholarship.

Duke Rundlett was the pitcher till his class graduated (1881) and he was the first curveball pitcher on the Dartmouth college nine. Incidentally Kelly '82 was the second curveball at Hanover, but he played only on his class nine freshman year, being unable to give more time to baseball because of the necessity of earning his way in college.

The class of '82 is one of the few classes prior to 1900 to have a 100 per cent subscription to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, though it took all the money so far realized from collection of 1944-45 class dues.
