(In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate)
THE DARTMOUTH CLUB of Saudi Arabia held its first meeting on the 23rd day of Gamard al Awwil, A.H. 1363 (May 13, A.D. 1944) and proceeded immediately to the election of officers. The presidency was deadlocked in a tie for thirty ballots, after which P. T. Hart '33, ruled that honorary class members are not eligible to vote. Hart brushed aside as irrelevant Eddy's claims to eligibility based on residence of his family in Hanover including a son Jack Eddy, now an undergraduate at Dartmouth. Hart was elected unanimously on the thirty-first ballot.
Arrangements were made for the spring picnic to be held at an oasis on the Mecca road, with camel's milk and dates to be provided out of the Club funds. No alcoholic beverages will be permitted, partly out of deference to the customs of the land, and partly because none is obtainable. Members will be permitted to bring to the picnic their temporary wives married according to Islamic law, provided such wives remain veiled at all times.
It was voted to send greetings to President Hopkins, and to the classes represented. Attendance was one hundred per cent of known alumni in Arabia. The complete list follows:
WILLIAM A. EDDY (h)1919, Secretary.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Parker T. Hart '33 is a U. S. Foreign Service Officer, and William A. Eddy has just been appointed minister to Arabia.
