WINTER SPORTS DEPARTMENT PLANS FOR THE APPROACHING SKI SEASON
SNOW HAS FALLEN! Although it refused to remain with us, it was an advent to the coming season. The new managers, taking warning from the falling flakes, have been busy getting the Winter Sports Department into shape. The election of directors took place last term but required an alteration at the opening of this term.
Foxhall Parker, USNR, who was elected Director of Winter Sports, has been transferred to Chapel Hill Pre-flight School, and has been replaced by Robert Willcox. Willcox is a native of New York City, and entered Dartmouth in 1941.
In the meeting of the Executive Committee, October 19, the election of the directors was completed with the following results: Director of Competitions, Malcolm Schetky, USNR; Director of Safety, Ed Howard '47; Ski Team Manager, Robert Shifman '47, USNR; Assistant Manager, Vern Lamb, USNR; Captain of the ski team, Howard Hewet '46. Schetky, Hewet, Howard, and Shifman were all active members of the Winter Sports Department last year.
FIRST AID CLASSES
The Director of Safety, Ed Howard '47, has planned a course in first aid, and classes are to be held in the Naturalist's building. Civilian students will be given Rec credit for this four-week course, but any member of the Outing Club is welcome to attend.
The class work and lectures are under the direction of Ross McKenney. Ross's experience with the out-of-doors and winter accidents, will be a great help in the training of these men. The course will cover basic first aid and specialize in treatment of ski accidents and exposure.
WEEK END OUTINGS
Oak Hill was visited Sunday, November 12, by a group of 35 winter sportsmen, who finished the bushing out of the ski trail. Two ex-Marine mess cooks combined their efforts and presented the working party with a delicious feed.
The deer are seemingly safe this season, as several members of DOC spent the week end in the woods hunting and returned empty-handed. Several deer were seen but escaped uninjured. Most of us were planning on having our first taste of that evergood deer meat, but it looks as if we will have to go out and get our own.
