Dartmouth Meets Diplomats
MAY 1989

The delegates shown in the chairs for Palestine and SWAPO had little trouble establishing relations—they were among more than 550 alumni, parents, faculty, and students who took over United Nations headquarters in March. Former President John Sloan Dickey '29—who helped draft the UN "Charter—served as inspiration for a two-day affair that celebrated Dartmouth's commitment to international education.

Some of the Dartmouth people are diplomats themselves. Guests and speakers included Stephen Bosworth '61, who as ambassador to the Philippines helped engineer Ferdinand Marcos's exit; Edward Luck '70, president of the United Nations Association of the United States; and Pulitzer prizewinning author David Shipler '64. Below, at the left, senior Chris Bartolomucci lunches with Thailand's UN Ambassador Nitya Pibulsonggram '62. At the right Soviet Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Serge Smirnov confabs with Barry Grove '73, president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York City, which cosponsored the event together with the Dickey Foundation's United Nations Institute and the College Office of Alumni Affairs.
