SKI TEAM PACES WINTER PROGRAM; TRAINEES TAKE TO HANOVER SLOPES
KEEPING PACE WITH the other Dartmouth athletic teams which have had great success since the beginning of the V-i2 program, the ski team got off to a good start in the new year by winning the 23rd Annual College Week Ski Tournament at Lake Placid.
Phil Osberg, USNR, led all competitors down the Whitney trail to win the downhill event. Phil Booth '47 tied for secondplace honors with Colin Stewart, Hanover High School ace. Capt. Bill Ashley, Wood,
Ellms, and Smith followed in that above order to give the Indians six places in the first ten.
In the slalom event, Middlebury College took first and second places and Dartmouth finished in the next four places with Wood, Ellms, Smith, and Booth in order.
The best we could do in the jump was sixth and seventh places by Hendrix and Smith. The competition in the event was made interesting by the entry of former college stars and several members of the Norwegian Air Force. Again, Colin Stewart of Hanover High demonstrated his ability as a top-notcher by winning the event.
"Mo" Distin '44, captain of last year's Dartmouth team, and now an Army Air Corps cadet, took fourth place in the jump, which is regarded as a creditable performance in view of the fact that prior to his two practice jumps in this meet he had done no skiing for a year.
INTRAMURALS ARRANGED
If meets are difficult to arrange due to wartime restrictions, the Winter Sports Department does not intend to remain idle, for intramural meets have been arranged which will give trainees and civilian students an opportunity for progressive competition. Members of the varsity ski team are conducting the D.O.C. Ski school each week-end during the present semester. Classes are held on the Golf Course, and past attendances have been encouraging. No fee is charged for instruction, and classes are open to all members of the College and community.
Three appointments to the Winter Sports Council were made at the last council meeting. Jim Brod '46, of New Rochelle, N. Y., was elected Assistant Director of Winter Sports. Assistant Director of Competitions went to Bill Soule '46, of Baltimore, Md., and Jim Jones '46, of Cleveland, was elected Assistant Manager of Varsity Skiing.
RAVINE CAMP STILL BUSY
The Ravine Camp at Moosilauke continues to hold first place as a choice for week-end trips and, although many facilities there have been discontinued for the duration, several trips are planned for future week-ends. Will Sharon, the woodsman philosopher of the Ravine Camp, is holding the fort up there,, and claims that he just manages to keep ahead of the freezing point by a short margin. Weekend visits by D.O.C. trip members and check-up calls by the D.O.C. 'manager bring Will up to date on world happenings.
Since the recent deep snowfall the Ski Tramway at Oak Hill has been running on week-ends for the benefit of trainees and others; no bad accidents so far, but the usual number of hackers run risks that experienced skiers never take.
ONLY REMAINING ALL-DARTMOUTH TEAM at present is the Big Green "A" ski team, which has fared well in early competition. Left to right, Ned Wood '47, Bud Ellms '45 USNR, Joe Hiebert '46, Howie Hewitt '46, Phil Booth '47, Phil Osberg '46 USNR, and Capt Bill Ashley '45 USMCR.
