Class of '65 Data
December 1961

FORTY-TWO percent of the present freshman class is at Dartmouth on some form of financial aid. The College itself has granted scholarships or a combination of scholarships and loans to 28% of the class, and is also providing loans only to another 7%. The remaining 7 % are the recipients of substantial scholarship grants from outside sources.

This information about the freshmen is part of the report on the Class of 1965 issued last month by the Committee on Admission and the Freshman Year and distributed to secondary schools by Edward T. Chamberlain Jr. '36, director of admissions.

The 805 freshmen in the class have come from 597 different preparatory schools, a record number. Those from public schools comprise 76% of the class, those from private schools 24%. There has been a slight but steady increase in the high school percentage in recent years.

Geographically, the freshman class conies 36.7% from the Middle Atlantic states, 22.6% from New England, 21.8% from the Middle West, 9.4% from the Far West, 5.5% from the South, and 4.0% from foreign countries. The foreign representation is the largest ever, and the Middle West figure also represents a marked increase, having almost caught up with New England, which continues to decline. The Middle Atlantic percentage is down from last year but is larger than the 36.2% of two years ago. Fortythree of the fifty states are represented in the class.

On College Board SAT scores, the verbal median for '65 men was 639 and the mathematics median 661. Both figures are record highs. For the past three entering classes the verbal median has climbed from 592 to 621 to 639. The math median has gone up from 638 to 650 to 661.

Beginning with the Class of 1966, the report announced, the final date for filing initial applications will be January 1 of the year of contemplated entrance. This earlier date is necessary to meet an announcement date of mid-April and a new candidates' reply date of May 1, to which Dartmouth subscribes.
