THE DARTMOUTH ALUMNI Council's 30th annual Alumni Fund campaign was off to a flying start by mid-February with the completed mailing of the Fund Committee's opening appeal, "The Place for Castles in the Air," and with early returns of $31,414 from 950 contributors already in hand to put the 1944 Fund ahead of last year's record-breaking campaign at this stage.

The opening mailing piece was written by President Hopkins at the request of the Fund Committee and was an authoritative and up-to-the-minute statement of the College's needs now and for the postwar reconversion period.

A number of Dartmouth classes are already well organized and under way, with class newsletters, some of which have kept going throughout the year, accelerating their appearance. A newcomer to this growing field is the '21 Smoker, edited by Willam A. Codding. On other class fronts, 1901's "Beat the Gunners" have already made possible the surpassing of the 1944 class objective of $2,120 and 1900, under Class Agent Clarence McDavitt, shows a current total of $2,000, representing about 135% of the class quota. The classes of 1914, 1915 and 1917 show totals of from $14.00 to $1750, and 1926, 1928, 1937, 1939 and 1940 have all made strong starts. From all over the world, Dartmouth service men, unsolicited, are beginning to send in the gifts that have given special meaning to the Fund in recent years.

A number of new Class Agents have taken over for the 1944 campaign: Hardy S. Ferguson '89 of Dobbs Ferry, N. Y.; John R. Spring '98 of Nashua, N. H.; Richard Ward '01 of Lawrence, Mass.; G. Kellogg Rose Jr. '15 of New York City; John W. Little Jr. '45 of Scarsdale, N. Y.; and Thomas K. Burnap '46 of New Canaan, Conn.; the last two working for classes that would normally still be in College.

Class Agents' dinners in Chicago, Boston and New York are tentatively set for late March and early April. President Hopkins hopes and expects to attend all three.
