APPOINTMENT OF Col. Richard H. Somers . USA, retired, of Washington, D. C., as Visiting Lecturer in Mathematics was announced last month by President Hopkins. He also disclosed the addition to the faculty of David B. Kirk of Haverford College as instructor in mathematics. Both men will assume their posts here on March 1, teaching courses in the Navy V-12 training program.

Colonel Somers, who is executive secretary and editor of the Army Ordnance Association in Washington, has previously taught at the United States Military Academy, where he was assistant professor of ordnance and gunnery, and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was associate professor of military science and tactics from 1924 to 1928. He graduated from West Point in 1907 and later did advanced work at the University of Pennsylvania and at Harvard, obtaining the degree of Master of Business Administration from the latter in 1928 and also attending the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences for three years.

Among his Army duties, Colonel Somers was commandant of the Ordnance School of Application, Executive Officer of the Army Industrial College, Ordnance Officer of the Panama Canal Department, Commanding Officer of the Watervliet Arsenal, and Chief of the Technical Staff in the Office of the Chief of Ordnance.

Kirk, who joins the mathematics staff as instructor, is a recent graduate of Haverford College where he has been.serving as mathematics instructor. His home is in Mill Hall, Pa.
