A letter from Ed Riley reveals that he joined the Navy in August o£ 1942 and has been on the go ever since. He has seen "much real action in the Atlantic and Mediterranean since then. We made many trips to Africa prior to the Sicilian show and were very much on the spot that day in July when all Hell broke loose over the town of Gela. Perhaps our worst time was during a raid at Palermo when we were subjected to constant bombings for four and a half hours. The ship received a quota for two men to be assigned to V-12 and my best friend and I were chosen. The only trouble is that I will have to agree to be broken from second class petty officer to apprentice seaman which means a reduction in pay of from 115 to 50 dollars, ouch." I haven't seen Ed yet but lady luck must be with him, for he was sent back here for his training. Charlie Holt is also back in Hanover for V-12 training. He was formerly stationed at San Diego, Calif. Dick Seybold came back this semester to finish some not infrequently broken up schooling so that there are still some familiar faces around after all.

Dave Joslyn communicates via V-mail from address unknown that he received a copy of "Dartmouth in Portrait" and that snoweven in pictures—is a hell of a lot better look. ing than this mud! Lt. Willard Hufstader writes from Murfreesboro, Tenn., "I've meant to write ever since I traded my overalls for khaki, but this last year has gone quicker than an hour exam. Russ Chase is in Shreveport. La., and from the way he writes I guess that is really a hot town." Aviation Cadet Stephen L. Mackey is beginning his second phase of flight training at Garden City Army Air Field, Kansas. George Rice has been shipped to Camp Howe, Texas from Oklahoma A. & M. where he was an engineering student in ASTP. "Last August I ran into Carl Loewenson and 'Doc' Byrnes at Fort Benning, and just the other day saw Bill Schact at Camp Howe. I'm now firmly convinced that one can meet a Dartmouth man anywhere." A P.S. tacked on to George's letter informs us that John "Gaucho" Phelps just recently was married down in Venezuela.
