Thursday, April 14 the flag on the Commons was flown at half-mast tor Don Bruce. Don died of severe burns received when his twin-engined plane burst into flames just as it had been successfully landed after trouble in flight above the Columbus Army Air Field, Columbus, Miss. The often used phrase "this is the price paid for war" strikes more deeply than ever now. Regretfully but proudly the class of 1945 adds its third gold star to its service flag.
Word has been received that Aviation Cadet Tracy Mitchell is scheduled to receive his silver pilot's wings and officer's bars soon at the twin-engine advanced flying school at Pampa, Texas. Thomas Ludwig was recently appointed a Naval Aviation Cadet and was transferred to the Naval Air Training Center, Pensacola, Florida. At long last 'Lefty' Grunditz came through with a V-mail letter from address unknown. Lefty is a mechanic in a torpedo-bomber squadron where "We have the blue Pacific in our front yard to swim in, and plenty of cocoanuts to eat if you care for them. Of course the woman situation is rather drastic, but then these native girls look just a little bit whiter every day."
Ted Wilson reveals that life in med school at Ohio State is rather tough, but has its compensations .... "you know, Saturday nights, blonde venus's, and a little Dartmouth atmosphere " When last heard from, Dave Wilkes, Marty Anderholm, Bert Hicock, and Jim Kriendler were all in ASTP at Charleston, S. C., and Bruce Kenworthy was ASTP at Oklahoma U. Johnny Callaghan seems to be doing all right at West Point. He writes, "Since coming here I have learned a lot I didn't know existed while at Dartmouth. During training we learned in five weeks what the usual enlisted man learns in thirteen. These drills and sham battles are really tough, and give one a taste of what to expect later." Jack Wheeler is taking civil engineering at Ohio State. Eliot Mover writes from Cambridge "The second contingent of Dartmouth men arrived at Harvard last Friday for Supply Corp. training to find the place finally infiltrated with the sons of old Eleazor." Eliot gave us some
news for the "Hearts 'n Flowers Department." Charlie "Reddo" Williams was recently engaged to Miss Martha Ann Williamson of Lakewood, Ohio. A fine party took place there at which some of the '45's were present; including Jim Broderick, Art Pounds, Rex Felton, George Pierce, and Bob Pease.
JOIN THE AIR CORPS and see the U.S.A. says Russell E. Chase '45, who, since induction in April 1943, has been stationed at air bases in seven different states.
