Smith Ridge
May 1944

In an engagement which brought him double honors of an unusual kind, Captain Lowell H. Smith '37, USMC had a ridge on Bougainville Island, which he helped to capture, named after him. Two hours after this action, still on the field of battle, he was promoted to his present rank of Captain. As with many another account of heroism, the details of his personal bravery are still lacking. After the fighting, Captain Smith was evacuated and hospitalized. He enlisted in the Marines as a private in 1941, and is now in active command of a company.
