Dr. Leonard C. Mead '36 has been elected Dean of the Tufts Graduate School, succeeding Dr. John P. Tilton, who becomes Tufts vice president. Formerly coordinator of research and chairman of the department of psychology at Tufts, Dr. Mead has combined, in his career, intense activity with intensive study. A specialist in the field of human engineering, he served as organizer of the Human Engineering Branch of the Office of Naval Research and as chief psychologist of the ONR Special Devices Center, from 1946 to 1948. He has been responsible for a program of research at Tufts which now approximates $1,000,000 annually.

During World War II, Dr. Mead was director of several research projects in personnel psychology undertaken by Tufts for the Navy and for the Office of Scientific Research and Development. His present research work includes the chairmanship of the Joint Panel on Training and Training Devices of the Committee on Human Resources of the Research and Development Board, and the deputy chairmanship of the Panel on Undersea Warfare Training Research of the National Research Council.

Dr. Mead, who received the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Rochester, joined the Tufts faculty as instructor in psychology in 1939. He was given the newly created position of research coordinator in 1948, made a full professor in 1949, and chairman of the psychology department in 1951.
