VARIED PROGRAM, FROM EXHIBITS TOWHITE WATER, WINS NEW FRIENDS

ROOM 23 IN ROBINSON HALL was the site of the first wartime DOC Activities Exhibit recently. Hundreds viewed it and a satisfactory percentage of the undergraduate body who came in promptly applied for membership.

Tom Dent was largely responsible for the original plans, which were formulated only two weeks before the exhibit opened. A committee of seven undergraduate members, Ross McKenney, and Doug Wade pooled their abilities, contributions, and time to make the display a true description of the varied opportunities and activities of the Outing Club.

Ross's contributions were predominant. The northeast corner of the room was converted into a veritable outdoor camping scene, complete with food, cooking utensils, reflector oven, sleeping bag, and pack sack. Doug Wade, the College Naturalist, contributed a large and interesting display in his field including bird traps, water- sampling kits, and species of insects. The Winter Sports Department undertook to portray its work with a display of different types of skis, slalom poles, Carnival pictures and awards, first-aid equipment, and ski pictures stressing proper form.

Model cabins, trail markers, cabin pictures and locations, maps, pictures of various trips during last year, and one entire panel on the Moosilauke Ravine Camp fittingly found their places throughout the room. Ross easily filled the higher sections of the south and west wall with handicraft from his shop. Leatherwork, snowshoe, packboard, and toboggan construction, canoe paddles, and many other outdoor necessities were there. The entire display was true representation of Outing Club activities.

IOCA CONFERENCE AT SMITH

Recognizing a need for the reorganization of the IOCA, the DOC, with the backing of several member clubs, called together the 12th Annual IOCA Conference on April 15-16 which was held at Smith College. A committee of five DOC'ers headed by Harlan Brumsted '46, USNR, club president, organized, planned and conducted the conference. The spirit and intense interest demonstrated by the delegates this year was second to none according to a number of the old-timers who were present. The DOC was chosen to edit and publish the tri-yearly IOCA bulletin for the ensuing year.

Ross McKenney, in his characteristic vernacular, talked to the group on "Getting the Most Out of Your Outing Club." After his talk he answered questions for fully half an hour. Tom Dent addressed the conference on "The Place of an Outing Club in a Liberal Arts College." His talk was nothing short of inspiring and received a rousing ovation.

Notices were mailed to 26 college outing clubs, and of that number 20 clubs sent a total of 60 delegates. Sixteen grads were on hand to assist in the discussions.

SPRING SKIING AT TUCKERMAN'S

Two trips to the famed head wall of Tuckerman's Ravine took place in April and May. The first party spent the night at Joe Dodge's cabin and were entertained by Lowell Thomas. The group making the May trip slept in AMC shelters. Most of Sunday, in each instance, was spent on the glistening slopes of the not-too-gentle headwall.

WHITE WATER AGAIN!

Although there are only a few "white water" artists left On campus, the Club has successfully conducted several such canoe trips on the White River this spring. Ross McKenney supervised several and left the boys with a keener desire for and some experience in the tricky art of running the foamy currents of the swollen rivers. Thrills, spills, and chills—in that orderwere quite the order of events on each trip.

C & T APPOINTMENTS

With the unprecedented induction of eight potential leaders, the Cabin & Trail Council now boasts of a total of 20 men. After experiencing an acute shortage of capable leaders during most of the winter and early spring, the Council decided on these eight men who have demonstrated their general worthiness. Two of the men are Marine trainees: Warren Anderson and Hanque Parker '46. The remaining six are members of the Navy V-12 Unit: Hugh Chapin, Pete Pierce, Foxhall Parker, Marvin Stephens, Jack Bennett '46, and Phil Osberg '46. An induction dinner at the Canoe Club was held in their honor on April 21. Of the 20 members now in C & T, only two are civilians.

A new department, under the leadership of Ed Kuhn '46, USMCR, was organized within the C & T Council at a recent meeting to handle the affairs of the Canoe Club. This department will be responsible for the Canoe Club for the duration. Canoeing on the Connecticut was opened to all DOC'ers on Saturday, May 20.

IOCA SONG BOOKS

Dick Best, formerly of Cornell, after a year of many trying experiences with the printers, publishers, and the OPA, has finally succeeded in delivering to the DOC 100 of the new lOCA Song Books. The 127 pages are filled with over 200 songs, the music to some included. The books are 50 each and two dozen have been set aside for ex-DOC'ers and may be obtained upon request.

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS INDOORS was the achievement of the Dartmouth Outing Club in the special exhibit held in the Club's Robinson Hall headquarters early in April. Fishing, hunting, hiking, and skiing were featured in addition to this campfire corner.
