OUR ANNUAL DINNER in San Francisco, Saturday, May 13, was truly a wartime event —soldiers, sailors, and many new faces, everything different from normal. President VanceCampbell '12, had to be in Chicago at the time, Assistant Secretary Deane Howland '34, likewise could not attend, as well as many regulars, but we who were left had a grand time.
After being ably corralled by Vice President Tavey Taylor '29, and Alumni Counselor GobDes Marais '26, the evening's program went oft like clockwork, complete with Gob's version of "Eleazar Wheelock." Many friends met who had not seen each other for years. One of the most surprised was Lt. John Nelson '36, here with the Army, who came face to face with his Latin instructor Bob Peck '98, from St. Paul's School, Concord, N. H. Bob has retired after 40 odd years at the school, to bask in the sunshine .in Mill Valley.
When the meeting was over, the last to leave the banquet room met three soldiers and three girls coming in. One of the soldiers wanted to know where the Dartmouth party was—said he was a little late. Not late at all; we went back and talked for another half hour with him, one Thomas Kelly '42, a true Alpha Delt Dartmouth Irishman. Others who attended were:
Prof. Fletcher Harper Swift '9B, Bob Leavens '01, Gus Ayers '06, George Hoyt '07, Jack Gray '08, Charlie Wood '08, Bill Butler '12, Paul Brown '14, Herb Gridley '14, Dr. Bill Washburn '14, Naasson Young '17, Major Fred Morse '18, Abe Winslow '20, Al Dunn '21, Lt. Al Dodge '21, Lt. Conrad Keyes '21, Dr. Tom Flint '24, Walt Baumann '25, Dr. Henry DeFeo '32, Bob Veres '33, Bill Gahagan '35, Dave Smith '35, Lt. Ed Brooks '36, Bob Bright '36, Tom Macey '38, Ensign Jack Gunther '41, Dusty Rodes '41, Sailor Jim Pettit '46. We missed Walter Hayt '78 this year, a regular attender, up for a slight hospital repair job so he will be ready for his 70th reunion in '48.
