DARTMOUTH OPENED ITS summer term, and the second year of the Navy V-12 program, with outdoor convocation exercises in the Bema on July 7. The student audience which heard addresses by Captain Cummings and President Hopkins included 1,898 Navy and Marine trainees enrolled for the term and 273 civilian students, made up largely of the 167 new freshmen who entered college as members of the Class of 1948.
Included in the Navy V-12 total for the summer are 1,714 Navy trainees and 184 Marines. New men who reported to the Unit on July 1 numbered 602, comprised of 580 sailors and only 22 Marines. The Navy enrollment this term is the largest since the V-12 program started off a year ago with 2,000 men.
To the 167 freshmen who entered Dartmouth on July 3 are added 14 of the 31 who matriculated in March as the vanguard of the class, thus giving 1948 a ment for the summer term also includes four men in 1944, sixteen in 1945, twenty in 1946, thirty in '1947, and two unclassi fied.
New freshmen went through a busy week of orientation before the start of summer classes on July 7. New men were greeted by President Hopkins at matriculation in the Faculty Room of Parkhurst, and were kept busy at other times with a series of orientation talks, placement examinations, and physical tests.
