The new Center for Computer Oriented Materials Production for Undergraduate Teaching (COMPUTE) will be the beneficiary of a $450,400 National Science Foundation grant to the College. The funds will give three year support to the project which is concerned with producing and distributing educational materials that support the use of computers to improve teaching at the undergraduate level.
The largest component of the NSF funding will be used to pay from six to twelve faculty members' salaries each summer. COMPUTE will also employ a large number of student assistants to help with programming and other related tasks. When each writing task is completed, the project will assume the role of editor and publisher of the material that emerges.
In addition to writing and publishing activities, COMPUTE will make itself available to College faculty members for various forms of advice and assistance in developing projects in all subjects that can make use of computers in teaching.
