PROMOTION OF EIGHT Dartmouth faculty members to full professorships and of five others to assistant professorships was voted by the Board of Trustees at its annual June meeting. The new full professors are: James F. Cusick, Economics; Louis P. Benezet '99, Education; Albert S. Carlson, Geography; Trevor Lloyd, Geography; Robert K. Carr '39, Government; Elmer E. Smead, Government; Sidney C. Hazelton '09, Physical Education; and Paul Sample '20, Artist in Residence.
Those promoted from instructor to assistant professor were: Daniel Marx Jr. '29, Economics; Vernon Hall Jr., English; James F. Crow, Zoology; Robert H. Denison, Zoology; and Virgil Poling, director of the Student Workshop.
New chairmen of the three Divisions of the faculty have been named for three-year periods as follows: Prof. Philip E. Wheelwright (Philosophy), Division of the Humanities; Prof. James W. Goldthwait (Geology), Division of the Sciences; Prof. Robert E. Riegel (History), Division of the Social Sciences.
Prof. Charles L. Stone '17 of the Psychology Department has been elected chairman of the important faculty Committee on Educational Policy, which passes upon all matters relating to the curriculum and which at this time is making a study of Dartmouth's postwar educational program.
Prof. A. Howard Meneely of the History Department has tendered his resignation as of July 1, and on August 1 will assume the presidency of Wheaton College.
Dr. Rolf C. Syvertsen '18 has been named Assistant Dean of the Dartmouth Medical School, in addition to his present posts of Secretary of the School and Professor of Anatomy. He joined the Medical School faculty in 1921, after teaching biology and zoology in the College for two years, and has been Secretary since that year. He has held his present professorship since 1938.
Dr. John B. Holyoke of the Medical School faculty has received a fellowship in pathology on the Mayo Foundation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Major DeOrmond "Tuss" McLaughry, USMCR, Dartmouth football coach on leave, has been named Judge Advocate of the Marine Corps training base at Parris Island, where he has been head physical training officer. His new duties also include those of Director of Rehabilitation.
