JOHN SLOAN DICKEY, as president-elect of the College, was the honor guest at a luncheon of the Dartmouth Club of Washington on Tuesday, September 18.

In the course of his informal remarks to the 280 club members gathered to greet him, Mr. Dickey pointed out that not only in the eyes of the alumni but in the eyes of many others as well, "Dartmouth has the rare, or rarest responsibility—the responsibility of

greatness. He also expressed the opinion that the liberal arts college was important today because 'there never was a time in the world's history when what men understand about the past and what they believe about the future was more important The context of understanding and belief within which men use today's knowledge will either lay mankind low or advance civilization to heights even dreamers have not imagined."

Mr. Dickey concluded by saying that he goes to Hanover with "the conviction that Dartmouth men are willing and Dartmouth men are determined to have a college worthy of them and worthy of our day and its needs."
