Our good president, BertMacMannis, never misses a beat, and so it was that he directed a good story from Dud Richards in our direction. Dud and Audrey made a gift to the Hood Museum of a colonial silver tankard produced in Boston about 1760-70 by the well known silversmith, Daniel Henchman. This is the silversmith who produced the Monteith bowl which Governor John Went worth presented to Dartmouth College on the occasion of its first commencement and is physically handed from the outgoing to the incoming president during College inauguration ceremonies. The tankard has now become a permanent part of the Hood's New England Silver Collection, which is quite extensive. The collection was donated primarily by Frank L. Harrington '24. Dud and Audrey made the gift as a memorial to three family members who preceded Dud at Dartmouth: his grandfather, William F. Furman 1880; his father, Joseph L. Richards '12; and his uncle Walter F. Furman '80. The tankard is nine inches high, weighs about 30 ounces, and was appraised at transfer at $10,000. Dud said he had a great time at the 50th and is already looking forward to our 55th.
We quote from a nice note from BarbaraHassrick, Royal's widow: "How grateful I am to the '39 Dartmouth Alumni Group for trying to keep me informed as to its activities and, in particular, the 50th Reunion. Royal would have loved it. Somehow I didn't think I could attend without him, but it sounds as if you have an active widow's group—so don't give up on me, particularly with Betsy Emmons at the helm. I look forward to meeting her one day. She does write a comforting letter. It made me sad to think I missed the memorial service."
After noting his outdated addresses in the 50th Reunion book, Chuck Farnum sends us a card with an update—November-June: 4237 Old Banyan Way, Sanibel, FL 33957, 813/472-2570; June-November: 6021 N. Imperial Drive, Apt. 139, Peoria, IL 61614, 309/692-4873.
Phil Dressier reports that he returned from a Dressier family mini-reunion in County Kerry, Ireland in August. "There were seven of us, my wife, Beth, with our two sons and daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. Of these only the daughter- in-law and I lacked an Irish ancestor".
From master magician Mike Ellis: "Betty Lou and I left Hanover following the reunion on June 11 and finally arrived home on August 16. We drove to San Diego to attend a magic convention and then spent some time on the West Coast before heading east. One more convention in Michigan and home at last. On September 4 we leave for the English convention, getting home on October 11. Meanwhile (he says to your scribe), keep practicing your part of the magic act. It is presumed that those of you who were at the 50th know to what Mike refers. I certainly do!
