One of the many instances of a doctor's devotion to his duty occurred during the invasion of Normandy when Capt. Walter E. Chase '36 MC AUS ignored the war to take care of the wounded.
He was up in the front lines fixing up an injured American soldier when his major suggested he go back as the Germans were about to counterattack. Capt. Chase refused the suggestion and kept on with his work. The Germans did counterattack and captured the doctor together with his patient.
An hour later, the Americans retook the position. The doctor, a prisoner, was still on the job but with an added patient, a wounded German.
