World War I Certificates
April 1945

ACTING ON A PETITION received from a dozen members of the class of 1919, President Hopkins has obtained authorization from the Board of Trustees to issue Dartmouth's Certificate of Merit to nongraduate alumni who withdrew from the College in 1914-1918 to participate in World War I. The Certificate of Merit, first designed for students who left Dartmouth to enter the armed forces in the present war, was announced and reproduced in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE for February 1943. The same certificate will be issued to World War I veterans who sacrified the opportunity to obtain their degrees to serve with the Allied Forces. A Latin inscription will distinguish these certificates as "In recognition of military service between 1914-1919."

Men who are eligible for this certificate and desire one should address a letter to Dean Neidlinger giving their name in full as they wish to have it appear on the certificate, confirming the fact that they withdrew from Dartmouth to enter military service, and naming the branch in which they served. Certificates will be mailed within thirty days to men who apply for them.

The certificate, signed by President Hopkins, reads as follows:
