The Annual Dinner at the Hotel Pennsylvania on April 26 bid fair to bulge the walls of that august hostelry, and '23 was visible and audible in good numbers. Among those who gathered at the Dartmouth Club for a pre-prandial potion, but were unable to attend the dinner, were Woody Gauss and Al Pierce. (That sounds bad. I mean only that they had other engagements.). Around the tables reserved for the class were: Charlie Curts (recovered from a long illness, and now with Devoe & Raynolds), Clary Goss, Bill Whipple, Spike Hamilton (now with Elizabeth Arden in New York), Sol Levine, Bill Corrigan, John Moore, Mox Hubert (who, in charge of music, produced a bang-up quartet), Frank Donovan of Peterboro, N. H., Ed Flindell, Joe Schiffenhaus, Irish Flanigan, Carleton White (recently removed from Buffalo to New York), Roy Height, Sam White, Joe Zone, Bob Siemon, Fitz Gordon, Hocky Hockenson, Tom Burch (in charge of dinner arrangements for the class), John Foster, Phil Wagner, Kip Couch, Sid Silberman, Jim Broe, George Plant, Cy Gordon, Lou VanOrden, Jim Doyle, Len Bronner, Major Nick Bernard (with a swell coat of tan fresh from the Philippines), and myself.
On the way to the Club we ran into Shiner Beggs, who sent his regrets; and we missed quite a few of the other "old reliables" who, in turn, missed a good party.
Prexy Hopkins spoke with all his old vigor about the opportunities and responsibilities of Dartmouth in the postwar educational scheme of things, and the satisfaction felt by both administration and Alumni in the continuing and increasing support that, he said, makes the Alumni the real owners of the College.
Captain Cummings praised Prexy and the College for willing cooperation and high efficiency in training officers for the Navy, and said that his investigations have shown Dartmouth-trained officers' service records are above the average shown by similar groups from other colleges.
Dr. Colin Stewart married Miss Elaine M. Mock early in April. Colin is a member of the medical staff of the Hitchcock Clinic, and he and his wife live at 5 Tyler Road in Hanover. Congratulations from 1923.
We're glad to know that Comdr. Babe Miner's new address is 1975 Tasso St., Palo Alto, Calif. Having missed Babe on his recent in-again-out-again trip to New York, we don't know whether this means a permanent assignment ashore or not, but we're hoping he will have a change from his sea duties in the Pacific theater.
Congratulations to Arthur Marshall, recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander!
Russell C. Roberts, who has been serving abroad with the Red Cross, has returned from the Philippines after covering thousands of miles of territory during eighteen months overseas. As a Red Cross field director with the First Calvary Division (dismounted) he was in the thick of things for several months.
Pinky and Barbara Bixby spent a few days with Howie and Helen Bartlett some weeks ago, and Pinky writes, "Howard has certainly gone great guns since he went into the field of education. He is now head of the English Department at M.I.T. and is laden down with the. responsibility of keeping his English faculty intact, what with the tremendous number of V-ia Navy boys in his classes. We also called on Rusty Sargent, who has a very beautiful home in Winchester which he recently acquired." Rusty, we understand, is a lawyer with one of Boston's quadrinomial firms.
While some of the less rugged of us hereabouts were deterred by inclement weather (a very lousy day it was), Irish and Alice Flanigan, John Moore, and Cy and Harriet Aschenbach fared forth to South Orange, N. J., on May sixth to a cocktail party at the Red Carbaugh's. With typical political aplomb, the question of the Hanover Mayoralty was avoided and the canapes went down without incident amid a murmur of gracious conversation. From all reports it was a thoroughly enjoyable party. Irish went so far as to acclaim Red the perfect host, but this statement will probably be retracted when the polls open in Hanover at 25th Reunion.
