Gifts to the College During Past Year Total $40,000

AT THE JUNE MEETING of the Alumni Council, Edward E. Martin '19 reported substantial increases in collections for Class Memorial Funds among classes approaching their 25th reunions. About $40,000 has been deposited with the College since July 1, 1944, by classes, whose campaigns for Memorial Funds were carried on last fall. At the present accelerated pace of increasingly substantial results achieved in Class Fund campaigns Mr. Martin predicted that total annual collections will reach $100,000 per year in the future.

Although the Class of 1920 could not hold its 25th reunion in June, in accordance with the policy of "110 reunions" for the duration, representatives of the class presented President Hopkins with a check for $20,600 on June 9. This principal amount of the Class of 1920 Memorial Fund is added to the endowment funds of the College within the structure of the Alumni Fund. Annual interest on the fund is added to the class achievement in the Alumni Fund every year. This plan, adopted by the Class of 1920, follows the pattern of the new series of 25th reunion gifts started by the Class of 1913 at its reunion in 1938. The Class Fund project adds a substantial class gift to the endowment of the College every year, and strengthens the annual class total for the Alumni Fund by adding annual interest to the credit of the class quota. Last year the Class of 1919 turned over $25,500 as its 25th year gift. This stands as the largest Class Memorial Fund to date.

In accordance with procedures adopted by the Alumni Council, annual campaigns in the fall season are limited to classes between their 20th and 25th reunions. Thus the following classes will concentrate on building up their Class Memorial Funds this fall: 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925. Other classes are eligible to deposit special gifts with the College for the purpose of establishing or increasing their Class Funds.

With its spectacular all-time high record of this spring's campaign, the Alumni Fund has again demonstrated its indispensability to the College as the one principal, source of support from Dartmouth men. The program of Class Memorial Funds is designed to: (1) provide a plan for a one-time Class Gift to the endowment of the College; and (2) add to the annual total Alumni Fund collections through credits of income from Class Memorial Funds. The significance of Class Funds to the security and welfare of the College, even in their brief history to date, can be realized in the total of $100,- 521.62 presented by the past eight 25th reunion classes, and by 1911. The interest on these funds credited to the Alumni Fund annually, now- growing every year, will be almost $5,000 this year.

Mr. Martin as chairman of the Alumni Council Committee on Class Gifts was tendered the following resolution for his outstanding leadership in the new project upon his retirement from the Council last month: That special commendationbe awarded Edward E. Martin '19 in connectionwith his successful chairmanshipof the Class Gifts Committee of the Council, which is now a substantial factor inthe financial affairs of Dartmouth. Whenthis committee was organized, the amountthought possible to be raised was $10,000.The class of 1920 is contributing doublethat amount this year. Mr. Martin looksforward to annual collections from thissource in the amount of $ 100,000.

The committee in charge of Class Gifts for 1945-46 is headed by Windsor C. Batchelder '19, New York City. The other members are: Arthur S. Dunning '11, St. Paul; Thomas P. Campbell ' 18, Denver; Richard W. Brown '29, Detroit; and Hugh A. Johnson '30, Buffalo.
