DR. ROLF C. SYVERTSEN '18 became Dean of the Medical School on July 1, succeeding Dr. John P. Bowler '15 who resigned because of the heavy pressure of outside duties. Dr. Bowler continues on the School faculty as Professor of Surgery.
The new Dean, who was the School's secretary for twenty years, had been serving as assistant dean in addition to being Professor of Anatomy at the School. He joined the College faculty in 1921 as assistant in biology and zoology, but after two years transferred to the Medical School's teaching staff. He has been a full professor since 1938. Dean Syvertsen received his M. D. from Rush Medical College in 1936.
Dr. Bowler had been Dean of the Medical School since 1927. Receiving his M. D. degree from Harvard in 1919, he was a Surgical Fellow at the Mayo Clinic from 1921 to 1924, and has for many years been a member of the surgical staff of the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital. He is one of New England's leading surgeons, a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, and a former president of the New Hampshire Surgical Club and the Grafton County Medical Society.
In accepting Dr. Bowler's resignation, the Dartmouth Board of Trustees formally voted its appreciation for his highly successful administration of the Medical School.
