SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ALUMNI were fortunate in planning their annual dinner for V-E night. It was a grand occasion for celebrating and renewing old friendships for the eighty men who attended. Bill Cunningham '19 handled the speaking assignment in a manner fitting the occasion. He reminisced about his early days as a coach at S. M. U. and his experiences as a reporter. Bill had been covering the San Francisco Conference for the BostonHerald and gave us interesting sidelights of the meeting together with a dash of his own philosophy for peace and democracy.
An election of officers resulted in the following slate for the coming year: president, Sam Hobbs 'is; vice president, John Lyman '28; secretary, Leon Rothschild '24; treasurer, Gran Luten '25. Dan Lindsley '16 presided at the meeting and ended a successful year as president of the association.
Congratulations were sent to Zeeb Gilman '63, the oldest living alumnus who had celebrated his 104th birthday. An acknowledgment subsequently received from his daughter stated that Dr. Gilman was in comparatively good health but not too alert. She also stated that Dr. and Mrs. Gilman had celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary but the Doctor, however, showed little interest in the event—much to his wife's disgust.
Paul Weston '33 did the honors at the piano and Lt. Rudy Pacht '35 led the singing. Dartmouth servicemen present included Major H. Sharp '94, Lt. Commander Buck Jones '25, Captain Carl Elmquist '25, Lt. Bill Brown Jr. '30, Lt. Si Chander '30, Major W. C. Mumler '35, Lt. Rudy Pacht '35, Lt. Charlie Shaaf '37.
In spite of the fact that all organization meetings have been hard hit by wartime conditions, our luncheons at the Savoy Hotel continue to be well attended. Regulars include Dan Lindsley '16, Sam Hobbs '12, John Lyman '28, Jerry Barnes '11, Jim Norton 'OB (since he left Lockheed), Bob Thieme '16, Jim Durkee '17, Murray Hawkins '19, and Charlie Milham '06, our winter refugee from New Hampshire whose yearning for the warmth of California sunshine brings him back to us periodically.
